Mario grew up in Douglas County, Georgia, and played his first organized basketball as a seventh and eighth grader at Stewart Middle School before graduating from Douglas County High School. The dream started earlier than that, at seven years old, and it never got quieter.
There was no straight line from that gym to a professional floor. There was poverty, there were seasons of neglect, there were people who told him the odds out loud, and there were stretches where the only vote of confidence in the room was his own and the faith his family raised him in.
What he had instead of a clear path was a willingness to do the parts nobody wanted. Guard the best player. Take the charge. Dive on the floor in a drill when the gym is empty. That became the identity, and eventually the identity became the opportunity.
