Mario West at a community back to school event
Home / Community

He went back for the block.

Mario grew up in Douglas County, Georgia, and the work he does now lands in the same schools and neighborhoods that raised him. Scholarships, financial literacy, mentorship, camps, and families getting what they need on a hard week.

The Mario West Foundation

Opportunity, delivered close to home.

The Mario West Foundation exists to empower underserved youth and families by expanding access to education, scholarships, financial literacy, mentorship, and community resources. It is rooted in faith and service, and it is built on the idea that a young person should not have to leave their own community to find a door.

Mario founded it after his playing career because the lesson he learned on the way to the NBA was never really about basketball. It was about what happens when somebody competent decides to stay in your corner.

The foundation partners with schools he attended himself, including Stewart Middle School and Douglas County High School, along with other local schools and education partners across the county.

Programs

Four ways the work shows up

Educate, invest, develop, empower. Every program the foundation runs sits under one of those four words.

Scholarships

Direct funding toward tuition and fees for students taking their next educational step, awarded with local education partners and announced at community events.

Financial literacy

Workshops for students and families on budgeting, saving, and managing money, the practical skills that decide whether opportunity actually turns into stability.

Mentorship

Goal setting, leadership development, and life preparation with mentors who stay present past the first meeting and treat follow through as the whole point.

Community outreach

Back to school days, holiday giving, meals and essentials for neighbors in need, and family resource events that bring the whole community into one room.

Camps and clinics

Basketball is the hook. The message is the point.

Mario runs camps and clinics where the drills are real and so is the conversation that follows them. Players work on defense, footwork, and competitive habits, then sit down and hear what those same habits look like in a classroom, in a job, and in a hard season at home.

Programs and schools can bring a clinic to their own gym, or partner with the foundation for a community camp that stays free for the families who need it to be.

  • Skill work with a defensive emphasis, taught by someone who made a career of it
  • Character and goal setting sessions built into the schedule
  • Options for school programs, rec leagues, and community partners
To whom much is given, much will be required.

What a good day looks like

Get involved

Four ways to
stand with it.

Companies, churches, civic groups, and individuals all plug in differently. Pick the one that fits what you have to give, whether that is money, hours, a room, or a relationship.

01

Sponsor

Corporate and community partnerships fund scholarships, workshops, and signature events, with recognition across foundation channels.

02

Volunteer

Mentor a student, staff an event, or help run a workshop. Most volunteers start with one day and keep coming back.

03

Give

One time and recurring gifts go directly into programs. The foundation site handles donations securely.

04

Invite

Bring Mario to your school, church, or company. Many partnerships start with a talk and grow into something longer.

Build something in your own community.

Whether you want to host a camp, fund a scholarship, or bring Mario to speak, the first step is the same conversation.
